Chris Merrill was born in Rockland, Maine, and has has always lived in the midcoast area.
His watercolors are realistic depictions of lighthouses, farms, boats and other Maine-inspired scenes. He is stirred by the simple beauty of the Maine home - the wood framed weathered structures and the play of light and shadow cast on his subjects by the sun. He considers all these to be the embodiment of the indomitable Maine spirit. He is best known for his careful attention to architectural detail and soft, warm lighting.
Chris has no formal training, but as a child he often visited the local museum, the Farnsworth, and was exposed to the work of the Wyeths, Edward Hopper and Winslow Homer who later influenced his work.
His wife, Debbie, is his inspiration and partner, and it was she who originally encouraged him to paint.
